Touring Retirement A Community in Calgary: What to Ask, What to Look For, and How to Know It’s the Right Fit

Touring a retirement community is one of the most important steps in a senior’s next chapter—but it can also feel overwhelming.

Families often walk in unsure of what to ask, what to look for, or how to tell if a community is truly the right fit.

Over the past 15+ years, I’ve had the privilege of working inside five different retirement communities in Calgary in roles ranging from Health Care Aide, Recreation Assistant, Recreation Manager, Front Desk, Sales Consultant, and Sales Manager.

That experience gave me a unique perspective:

The right community can completely transform a senior’s life. The wrong one can do the opposite.

This is not a one-size-fits-all decision—and your tour is where everything becomes clear.

1. How to Start Your Tour the Right Way

Before you even ask questions, pay attention to how you feel when you walk in.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel welcomed here?

  • Does the environment feel warm and safe?

  • Are staff engaging naturally with residents?

  • Do residents look comfortable and connected?

First impressions matter—but not in the “fancy lobby” way. It’s about energy, connection, and atmosphere.

2. The Most Important Question: Do You Have 24/7 Nursing Support?

This is one of the most overlooked—but critical—questions families should ask.

Not all communities are the same.

Ask clearly:

“Do you have 24/7 nursing support on-site?”

Why this matters:

  • Some communities only have front desk or limited staff overnight

  • In a medical emergency, this can delay response time

  • It may result in unnecessary hospital visits that could have been avoided with proper on-site support

Understanding the level of clinical support is essential for safety and peace of mind.

3. Daily Life: Meals, Routines, and Structure

Ask about:

  • Visiting hours

  • Dining times

  • Assigned seating vs flexible dining

  • Meal variety and flexibility

These small details shape daily happiness more than people realize.

A rigid environment may not suit someone who values independence, while structure may be comforting for others.

4. What Is the Community Culture Really Like?

This is one of the most important—but least asked—parts of a tour.

Look around and ask:

  • What is the average age of residents?

  • Is the community active and engaged?

  • Do you see people socializing or sitting alone?

A vibrant community should feel alive—not quiet or empty.

Watch how residents interact with each other and with staff. That tells you more than any brochure ever will.

5. What to Ask the Staff

Staff are the heartbeat of any community.

Ask:

  • “How long have you worked here?”

  • “What is your favourite part of working here?”

  • “Can you share a story of a resident who moved in and thrived here?”

Pay attention to:

  • Pride in their answers

  • Emotional connection to their work

  • Genuine stories vs scripted responses

Great communities have staff who want to be there—not just work there.

6. The Real Question: Will This Help My Loved One Thrive?

This is the question behind everything.

A great retirement community should support:

  • Physical health

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • Social connection

  • Sense of purpose

In my experience working inside these communities, I’ve seen it repeatedly:

The right environment can take someone from surviving… to truly thriving.

Residents become more social, more active, and often more themselves again than they’ve been in years.

7. Senior Living Has Changed (A Lot)

There are still outdated assumptions about senior living—but the reality today is very different.

In Calgary, communities have evolved significantly over the last 30+ years:

  • More choice than ever

  • Better design and accessibility

  • More focus on lifestyle, not just care

  • Stronger emphasis on dignity and independence

Today’s communities are designed to support a full and meaningful next chapter.

8. The Reality: Demand Is Increasing Fast

One important factor families don’t always hear about:

There is a growing shortage of senior living capacity.

In fact, projections suggest that Calgary is already behind in available suites compared to expected demand in the coming years.

What this means for families:

  • Availability may become more limited

  • Waitlists may grow

  • Planning ahead creates more choice and less stress

If you’ve been considering a move, timing matters more than most people realize.

9. How to Know It’s the Right Choice

After touring, trust both:

  • Logic (care level, services, location)

  • Emotion (how it felt)

The right community usually feels:

  • Comfortable

  • Safe

  • Active

  • Welcoming

And most importantly: It feels like a place where your next chapter can be a good one.

How I Help Families

As someone who has worked inside retirement communities in multiple roles across Calgary for over 15 years, I help families:

  • Understand what to look for on tours

  • Compare communities objectively

  • Ask the right questions

  • Avoid costly mistakes

  • Find the right fit—not just the available option

Choosing a retirement community is not just a housing decision—it’s a life decision.

And when the right fit is found, it can truly become one of the best chapters of a person’s life.
